Selfless – Director’s Message

“Alongside other parents I hope that we can truly understand the challenges that our children are up against with this ever present entity, ‘the internet’.  At times it feels a silent snake, slowly slithering and deeply infiltrating the integrity of our moral compass.”

– Kim Laureen ‘Director Selfless’

It seems questions are placed upon our heart with hope that it will ignite a flame of curiosity to encourage an answer.

As a mother and a film maker I feel urgency as I look around and see heads down – engaged in some ‘thing’ that holds one captive miles away from where you stand.

Recent studies are telling us that 50% more kids are depressed today than they were 20 years ago – why, because they are choosing to be home alone on their screens vs. spending time with friends.
Snapchat is telling us they are putting up over 3 billion posts every single day – with Instagram boosting over 100 million.

Imagine what we could do with all that time!

These numbers are staggering- but even more alarming is the fact that 66% of our girls are uploading sexually explicit photos in these places, while 93% of our boys are experiencing their first sexual awakening there.

Make no mistake – we are in an epidemic!

Selfless is a documentary aspiring to light youth up and inspire them to see how their world opens up – when they close those windows.
How are we spending the precious time bestowed upon us and where will our footsteps lead the next generation?

Our hope is to good things.

Instead of pointing at unhealthy behaviours we focus on youth making a difference in their communities – showing how full life can truly be, when free from those chains that bind.

Our quest with Selfless began in Vancouver B.C. and takes us to the hills of Totnes, England. We are traveling near and far to tap into the can do spirits of some amazing people, who touch on the cornerstones of humanity.

Our next stop is Laguna Beach, California to film with Ryan Hickman – a seven year old with a heart for the environment and the marine mammals that inhabit it.

Stay with us as we bring you on a journey that will make your heart yearn for days gone by and fill it with hope for amazing days to come.

Let our youth rise up in Selfless – a film filled with colour – music and love.

Do What You Love – Love What You Do

The eagle has landed after a three week journey to places we only ever dreamed to walk through England, Scotland and Amsterdam.
Two old souls with hearts wild and full of reckless abandon – letting the stars guide their path to the very place they are meant to be.
It seems the most important and yet the hardest part of documentary film making, is collecting the footage and allowing the story to unfold. In a society where all is moving so fast it is difficult at times to find the strength to walk as slowly as it often times takes to get this job done.
Be brave enough to allow passion to drive you – remain authentic to the stories collected onto each memory stick you shoot – don’t lose sight of your purpose.
Stay true to the course and you are on your way to creating something worth watching – with the potential to imprint on the hearts of those who take the time to  engage.
This year will see three films come to life as we take it to the limit of our dreams.

SELFLESS – Behind the Lens – Love Yourself More are Fresh Independence – they are documentary – music – life.

Do what you love – love what you do and never give up on what you believe in.

Stay tuned as our team of dedicated hearts brings you some amazing stories. We could not do it without each other.

Warm  regards,
Kim Laureen

The affect of technology and social media- Examining this revelation diligently redefining the human race.

It’s confusing because the focus of so many is to be a hero in social media – placing their value on how many Followers, Likes or shallow comments they receive – but we must look and wonder how many points have they in the human race?
People feel a sense of freedom with the internet, but in truth too many have become slaves with ‘it’ as their master rendering them unable to enjoy and appreciate the simple things around them with no filter on and that are simply ‘real.’

Stay tuned and we welcome you on our journey from here to there – asking has the pendulum swung too far?

Nashville, the crew fell for you.

Thirdman Records

Americana roots captured the soul after trying hold our claim on the LA freeways and plastic culture. Nashville greenery, subtle humdrum, and country rock of Broadway opened the can of, ’happy’ in our hearts as we captured that and more of what we were looking for.

Escondido 1

Currently we reside at home in Vancouver; watching the rain drizzle down the window and pull footage as we storyboard and begin a first edit for the trailer pitch.

This post goes out to our Cinematographer Wes Chew. It is not without you and your giving heart that our shutter speed would have remained half hazard, lost in ISO darkness, only to drift in and out of focus if you did not manually save us! Thank-you for making us laugh, question, and challenge the essence of this Film. You are our Earth Angel.

What do you know… the sun just came out!
