Dave Cheetham Stops By To Share His Latest Album – One Star Away

I love hopeless love stories. My fav movie choices make me cry and my kids laugh at me all the time. I think it’s okay and I’m old enough to do that. All this time I’ve been a fan of romance and I never knew it.

Do what you love – love what you do – is our mantra at Fresh Independence.
Best part of that is meeting so many nice people.

Early on we had the pleasure of bumping into songwriter Dave Cheetham from Deganwy, Wales.
Filled with British charm and a wise cracking demeanour that will keep you on your toes, he never fails to come through when we need him most.
He’s come by to share his latest album ‘One Star Away’ – with the title song inspired by astronaut Scott Kelly – who reflected his thoughts while gazing upon the face of earth.
Lovely to the core – we invite you to share our conversation and get to know more about this man behind the music.

Everything Old Is New Again

It’s true that life turns in cycles and if you wait long enough ‘that thing’ will come round again. Next to Jack White we chant with enthusiasm for the return of vinyl albums. No digital image can replace that piece of artwork and the depth of it’s inner sleeve with all the secrets of time embellished right there. Album covers are the poster, the poem and the package for the project at hand.

This past Christmas, vinyl was on many a wish list and the first half of 2016 saw a 56% increase in sales which set the year up to be on track for the biggest record sales in over two decades.

But who’s buying all these records? According to industry researchers half of vinyl record buyers are under 25. They also find that men are more likely to buy LPs than are women, which might not come as a surprise given record collecting’s rep as a boys’ club.

Progress shows blending the best of the old with the new is a killer combo and with Apple Music & Spotify – one is able to test drive the music before they lay their money down. It’s very cool to feel the pendulum swing towards something we can really hold on to. Music is the universal language with the ability to cross a multitude of barriers and now more than ever, albums are a solid investment in the arts.

Mondo Cozmo – Shine

New band – new tour bus – new music.

Things are shining bright for Josh Ostrander and his new project ‘Mondo Cozmo’ – named after his dog Cozmo. Ostrander says he wanted something that would look cool on a t shirt. Fast on the rise with a rave review from Rod Stewart and he’s been praised with an ‘in tune’ Bob Dylanish quality.

‘Shine’ a big single that hooks right into the heart sounds as good or better live than the recording which is true testament to the sincerity of Josh’s voice. Asked if he wanted to share the meaning behind the song he simply replied ‘Absolutely not. I’ll just play it for you.’ It’s perfect in a way, because the song takes on a meaning all it’s own for whoever listens.

“I am East Los Angeles but originally from Philly. I am not sure if I graduated high school. I can be soulful one moment and screaming Sixes and Sevens the next. I am the guy who orders 2 beers whenever I go into a bar and I pick up the phone whenever my mom calls. I want to do whatever I want. I want to connect with everyone. There is no demographic.”

Be sure to call into their telephone line and leave some love and encouragement.

Don McLean – History Plays On

An enlightening conversation with singer, songwriter Don McLean who’s living proof that three chords are all you need – and then the rest is up to you.

‘I heard Woody Guthrie play and I heard a verse and a chorus and I thought hey I think I can do that. I wrote everything off a guitar and as I got to be a better guitar player my songs grew.’

I really enjoyed speaking with Don who brings you back to where it all started for him – what he’s learned along the way and how much he still loves playing music today.

“Take control, get your life to the place you want it to be – in the height of my career people thought I had it made but Kenny Rogers was right when he said ‘in truth you’re not having any kind of life at all.'”
