Our constant

1977,  The Fleetwood Mac album ‘Rumours’ went to No. 1 on the US album chart. It went on to win a grammy in 1978 and later sell over 45 million copies.

Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967 in London when Peter Green; (the guitarist who replaced Eric Clapton in the British blues band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers) asked Mick Fleetwood to come in as drummer. The band took on many changes over the coming years as Fleetwood and John McVie combined talents with other musicians. It wasn’t until 1969 that Christine Perfect who was married to bassist John McVie made her first appearance with the band as Christine McVie. Together the existing band members went through some legal turmoil with their name and struggled to find their core. Changes were constant and Fleetwood began scouting a guitar replacement for the band. While Fleetwood was in Van Nuys, California someone played him a track titled ‘Frozen Love’ from a band called ‘Buckingham Nicks’.  Fleetwood liked it and was introduced to the guitarist from the band Lindsey Buckingham. Coincidentally on the day he was hearing the track at Sound City Studios, Buckingham was there recording some demos. Fleetwood soon asked him to join. Buckingham agreed on the condition that his musical partner and girlfriend also become part of the band; Fleetwood agreed. Buckingham and Nicks joined the band on New Year’s Eve 1974.

King Eider- Edinburgh, Scotland

KingEider

We cannot get this song off repeat. Blues has found a home in our hearts these days. It fills a space missing in music of today. King Eider hits the nail on the head delivering a stellar mix of folk and blues. On their way to Glastonbury this weekend, we caught them for a piece of insight.

Folk has the storytelling feel of songs for the people while blues reaches deeper into the emotional psyche.

From Busking to Glasto. what is the most valuable lesson you have learned along the way?

Our advice to any up-and-coming acts is just get out there, don’t turn down gigs that you might not think can help you because you never know who will show up to them! We think that is the most valuable lesson. We busked near Green park, only to be thrown out for lack of a license, and subsequently ended up on BBC Radio London which has led us to countless opportunities. Whether that is busking before a gig to warm up or playing a gig at a venue you know will give you a drum kit with bailing twine holding it together, you just never know what can happen. It always amazes us that some bands get an ego before they have anything to be arrogant about.

What do you hope fans take from your music?

We hope that fans of our music will see that we want to write songs that take you on both a lyrical journey and a musical one. We want to trigger emotional responses as well as an impression that we have made an effort to be different and have our own musical style that you will know when you hear it; for it’s uniqueness, not it’s comparability to other bands. There are too many bands trying to replicate bands on the scene already and it seems a waste to emulate something already out there. Above though, we want them to enjoy it and get that hook stuck in their head for the rest of the day (in a good way!).

NICHOLAS & THE PESSIMISTICS

Name: Nicholas Baker
Age: 33
Where you are writing this: Standing in front of the computer at the Flower shop my wife and I own.

Home is where your story begins, please tell us a little about yours…

I grew up in a 3 bedroom 1 bath ranch house in a small historic town in Southwestern Ohio. I have a brother who’s 8 years my elder and two parents that shouldn’t have been together but still managed to keep it together for about 20 years. Dad played in bar bands and mom sang in the choir at the local non-denominational church. I like to say that I figuratively grew up somewhere between George Jones and Jesus. Learned a lot about what music is for people during that time. Especially the healing aspects.

Introduce your band mates…

Shawn Steele (lead guitar) is a true student of his instrument . He takes pride in his job and is very careful to add to the song without trying to be too flashy or over the top even though he’s more than capable of being both.
Alex Fraser (Bass) has a knack for streamlining songs and an excellent ear for audio. With a dense engineering background he brings so much to the table both in the studio and during writing sessions.
BJ Schweinlin (drums) is a true optimist and has enough motivation too for all of us. To say he’s an asset is an understatement.
