Selfless – Director’s Message

“Alongside other parents I hope that we can truly understand the challenges that our children are up against with this ever present entity, ‘the internet’.  At times it feels a silent snake, slowly slithering and deeply infiltrating the integrity of our moral compass.”

– Kim Laureen ‘Director Selfless’

It seems questions are placed upon our heart with hope that it will ignite a flame of curiosity to encourage an answer.

As a mother and a film maker I feel urgency as I look around and see heads down – engaged in some ‘thing’ that holds one captive miles away from where you stand.

Recent studies are telling us that 50% more kids are depressed today than they were 20 years ago – why, because they are choosing to be home alone on their screens vs. spending time with friends.
Snapchat is telling us they are putting up over 3 billion posts every single day – with Instagram boosting over 100 million.

Imagine what we could do with all that time!

These numbers are staggering- but even more alarming is the fact that 66% of our girls are uploading sexually explicit photos in these places, while 93% of our boys are experiencing their first sexual awakening there.

Make no mistake – we are in an epidemic!

Selfless is a documentary aspiring to light youth up and inspire them to see how their world opens up – when they close those windows.
How are we spending the precious time bestowed upon us and where will our footsteps lead the next generation?

Our hope is to good things.

Instead of pointing at unhealthy behaviours we focus on youth making a difference in their communities – showing how full life can truly be, when free from those chains that bind.

Our quest with Selfless began in Vancouver B.C. and takes us to the hills of Totnes, England. We are traveling near and far to tap into the can do spirits of some amazing people, who touch on the cornerstones of humanity.

Our next stop is Laguna Beach, California to film with Ryan Hickman – a seven year old with a heart for the environment and the marine mammals that inhabit it.

Stay with us as we bring you on a journey that will make your heart yearn for days gone by and fill it with hope for amazing days to come.

Let our youth rise up in Selfless – a film filled with colour – music and love.

Our constant

1977,  The Fleetwood Mac album ‘Rumours’ went to No. 1 on the US album chart. It went on to win a grammy in 1978 and later sell over 45 million copies.

Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967 in London when Peter Green; (the guitarist who replaced Eric Clapton in the British blues band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers) asked Mick Fleetwood to come in as drummer. The band took on many changes over the coming years as Fleetwood and John McVie combined talents with other musicians. It wasn’t until 1969 that Christine Perfect who was married to bassist John McVie made her first appearance with the band as Christine McVie. Together the existing band members went through some legal turmoil with their name and struggled to find their core. Changes were constant and Fleetwood began scouting a guitar replacement for the band. While Fleetwood was in Van Nuys, California someone played him a track titled ‘Frozen Love’ from a band called ‘Buckingham Nicks’.  Fleetwood liked it and was introduced to the guitarist from the band Lindsey Buckingham. Coincidentally on the day he was hearing the track at Sound City Studios, Buckingham was there recording some demos. Fleetwood soon asked him to join. Buckingham agreed on the condition that his musical partner and girlfriend also become part of the band; Fleetwood agreed. Buckingham and Nicks joined the band on New Year’s Eve 1974.

Shot in Palm Springs, California for Lululemon Ambassador and Golf Professional: Hannah Dirksen

Letting the subject naturally move in and out of a shot is key in cinematography. The same goes for fabric, a signature style of mine is letting the fabric flow and speak for itself. I always aim to add this texture and depth to film.

The song is, “Shameless” by Lissie. The backstory is remaining natural and not conforming to society’s beauty standards.

I hope women will always encourage their girls to be part of a sport. It keeps you busy, teaches you about respecting your body, and gives you a place to fit in.
