Matt Corby – Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver B.C>

“We let his voice swallow us into a new dimension.”

A rare mix of John Legend and Paolo Nutini rested easy in the arms of
our favorite sold out venue, The Commodore.

Intrinsic and ambient.
Matt Corby is a taste of the past, refreshing thirsty hearts of today.

Corby’s passion delivers a performance that purifies the soul.
Standing in a comfortable presence of his own [not just because he was
in his socks] thoughts slowly crept, ‘what is it that makes Matt’s
style run deep, stand apart, and where does this come from?’

I realize, roots run deep, Australia is true to their homeland and use
of instrumental tonality was the key that set this music apart from
the rest.

I don’t get all caught up in it. It’s just what I do. I’m passionate about it.

I’m pretty good at this… and there’s an audience for it. I’m just going after it.

I love that you know they’re guitars in our music. It’s like you don’t hear guitars anymore. It’s so cool to hear it, and there needs to be more guitar heroes.

Leon Bridges Restores Faith

Just when all began to feel lost – along came Leon Bridges to lead us to the river of hope offering all thirsty souls a drink of possibility. In a modern day disposable society where anything seems to go and does, he restores faith in the human spirit. Our greatest wish for him is that he will always hold on to that sense of wonder that whispers deeply within, and began with those first steps such a short time ago in August 2014. His fresh presence is long overdue as he imprints on the hearts of  faithfulness.

I feel like I’m paving out my own path.  People are very positive about what I’m doing and receiving it pretty well. I had one guy who told me “I love what you’re doing, but why don’t you do a little more funk?” And that’s not a bad thing, but that’s just not what I do. I’m more on the smooth side of soul. I’m coming from a Ginuwine and Usher background, slow and smooth songs. And that’s why I really connected to Sam Cooke, because he was just very smooth. It’s not like the James Browne types, which is all great stuff, but he was totally set apart from those guys.

I had never thought of recording straight to tape before meeting [White Denim guitarist-producer] Austin Jenkins. I just wanted to record and get some songs down. When Austin first met me, he just said, ‘I love your sound, I want to record everything to tape and just really capture that 1950s/1960s sound.” The first session made me realize that this is what I need to do. It was such a good feeling being in the great room with all of the musicians, me and the backup singers in the same room, the musicians playing at the same time. You just really feed off of everybody’s energy and vibe. If you screw up the take, you do it again, you get the take and it’s good.

Keep up to date with Leon Bridges

Vancouver born Christina Marie found refuge in music as a child growing up under the influences of Heart, Blondie, Madonna, Bjork, Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, Pat Benatar. This lone wolf made her presence known in 2013 winning the prestigious ‘Peak Performance Music Project’  before a howling crowd of supporters. Rykka has found her sound deep in the nature of Canada and Switzerland and it is there that she has been busy writing her new music. Working hard out on the road she is finding her own rhythm and pace as she lays down her mark in music history. Change is constant and time keeps on turning, leaving us open to feel the good vibrations and sense of wonder that Rykka delivers within her latest song MOVIES

Home is where your story begins – please tell us a little about yours.

I was born in Vancouver and grew up in Surrey. There was never too much to do, so I spent a lot of time using my bedroom walls as a free canvas and listening to Mariah Carey.

How did music find you and begin to grow within?

My mom took choir in high school and taught my brother and sister and I to sing harmonies in the car. As I grew up I was really ADD + ADHD and found that constant art output was the key to help me function as a human.
