Annie Leivobitz Recalls a Precious Time in Music History

“I sometimes think of that photograph as 10 years in the making. I met John Lennon and Yoko Ono in New York in the early part of my career. It was 1980, and he had just finished the album Double Fantasy with Yoko. I had seen the cover, which was both of them kissing. And I thought, Oh my gosh. This was the 1980s—romance was a little dead. And I was so moved by that kiss. There was so much in that simple picture of a kiss. So, for the photo I wanted to take, I imagined them somehow together. And it wasn’t a stretch to imagine them with their clothes off, because they did it all the time. But what happened at the last minute was that Yoko didn’t want to take her clothes off. So, we went ahead with the picture, and it was this very striking picture of Yoko clothed against a naked John. And of course, John was murdered later that afternoon. It’s actually an excellent example of how circumstances change a picture. Suddenly, that photograph has a story. You’re looking at it and thinking it’s their last kiss, or they’re saying goodbye. You can make up all sorts of things about it. I think it’s amazing when there’s a lot of levels to a photograph.”

Leon Bridges Restores Faith

Just when all began to feel lost – along came Leon Bridges to lead us to the river of hope offering all thirsty souls a drink of possibility. In a modern day disposable society where anything seems to go and does, he restores faith in the human spirit. Our greatest wish for him is that he will always hold on to that sense of wonder that whispers deeply within, and began with those first steps such a short time ago in August 2014. His fresh presence is long overdue as he imprints on the hearts of  faithfulness.

I feel like I’m paving out my own path.  People are very positive about what I’m doing and receiving it pretty well. I had one guy who told me “I love what you’re doing, but why don’t you do a little more funk?” And that’s not a bad thing, but that’s just not what I do. I’m more on the smooth side of soul. I’m coming from a Ginuwine and Usher background, slow and smooth songs. And that’s why I really connected to Sam Cooke, because he was just very smooth. It’s not like the James Browne types, which is all great stuff, but he was totally set apart from those guys.

I had never thought of recording straight to tape before meeting [White Denim guitarist-producer] Austin Jenkins. I just wanted to record and get some songs down. When Austin first met me, he just said, ‘I love your sound, I want to record everything to tape and just really capture that 1950s/1960s sound.” The first session made me realize that this is what I need to do. It was such a good feeling being in the great room with all of the musicians, me and the backup singers in the same room, the musicians playing at the same time. You just really feed off of everybody’s energy and vibe. If you screw up the take, you do it again, you get the take and it’s good.

Keep up to date with Leon Bridges

Fabrizio Belardetti Photos From The Heart & Soul

A Fabrizio Bellardetti

A picture says a thousand words then leaves us to wonder where they come from. Who is the artist and what inspires them to seek and capture images that have the ability to imprint on the human spirit in a way one never expected. In this journey called life even art has rules but the beauty in that is letting the heart break them when the timing feels just right. Do what you love – love what you do and always allow your ambition to match your ability. Then the stars have the opportunity to align just as they are meant to and the rest can be captured in a perfect moment to be enjoyed forever.

Get to know what inspires this Italian born, now living in the heart of Vancouver photographer – Fabrizo Belardetti

Home is where your story begins… please tell us a little about yours.

My story begins in Bologna, Italy, where I was born in 1976. I was quite an exuberant kid, very curious but a bit shy.
I remember I loved to play Lego, especially during the winter, and playing outside with my friends in the warmer months.
Bologna is the food capital in Italy. I remember watching my grandmother preparing “tortellini in brodo” on Sunday morning, what a display of knowledge and talent!
You need slim fingers and great skills to create the most amazing food out there. I learned how to cook healthy and delicious food, and I will never forget their gestures.
My academic background is scientific, as I graduated in Medical Biotechnologies, and took a Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics.

A Fabrizio 2
