Cariboo Express – Making Music Count Across Western Canada

Who couldn’t find something to live for with Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts.

Music – such a powerful expression from above, and there is nothing more fulfilling than to watch it grow and infiltrate into the hearts and lives of those who need it most.

So nice to catch up with Barney this week to chat about Cariboo Express –  a talented ensemble that has been touring each November for more than a decade to make a difference with their gift of music.

This is a one-of-a-kind variety show cast with renowned Canadian musicians, led by Canadian superstar Barney Bentall, along with Ridley Bent, Dustin Bentall, Kendel Carson, Matt Masters, Wendy Bird, various special guests and a backing band comprised of some of Canada’s finest musicians. Each of the core members have music careers of their own, but every November the group convenes to raise funds for various worthy charities in the spirit of song, community and giving back to society.

Cariboo Express has raised $850,000 to date, which is true testament to their vision of lending a hand where it may be needed most – and they are so very far from finished.

Fresh Independence is excited to take part in their Vancouver show Saturday November 26th at the Vogue Theatre on Granville Street.

Hope to see you there!

Behind the Music with The Palms

The overall message behind Future Love is the idea that we all live, love, learn, fuck up and live again.  As long as we all strive to be the best version of ourselves as possible, then we’re doing it right.  There’s become this culture of viciously attacking people online after they’ve been caught doing something illegal or immoral.  As if society has taken it upon themselves to become the moral police or something.  It’s like, no shit, we all make mistakes, it’s part of life and the people feeling the need to anonymously slander a stranger on twitter for getting caught doing cocaine at a baseball game or something, need to get over themselves and worry about their own shit. Our mentality is…fuck it, we’ve smoked it, we’ve drank it, we’ve stolen some shit and we’ve hurt some feelings and we’ve learned a lot in the process.  Stop judging other people for living their lives and focus on your own.

Leon Bridges Restores Faith

Just when all began to feel lost – along came Leon Bridges to lead us to the river of hope offering all thirsty souls a drink of possibility. In a modern day disposable society where anything seems to go and does, he restores faith in the human spirit. Our greatest wish for him is that he will always hold on to that sense of wonder that whispers deeply within, and began with those first steps such a short time ago in August 2014. His fresh presence is long overdue as he imprints on the hearts of  faithfulness.

I feel like I’m paving out my own path.  People are very positive about what I’m doing and receiving it pretty well. I had one guy who told me “I love what you’re doing, but why don’t you do a little more funk?” And that’s not a bad thing, but that’s just not what I do. I’m more on the smooth side of soul. I’m coming from a Ginuwine and Usher background, slow and smooth songs. And that’s why I really connected to Sam Cooke, because he was just very smooth. It’s not like the James Browne types, which is all great stuff, but he was totally set apart from those guys.

I had never thought of recording straight to tape before meeting [White Denim guitarist-producer] Austin Jenkins. I just wanted to record and get some songs down. When Austin first met me, he just said, ‘I love your sound, I want to record everything to tape and just really capture that 1950s/1960s sound.” The first session made me realize that this is what I need to do. It was such a good feeling being in the great room with all of the musicians, me and the backup singers in the same room, the musicians playing at the same time. You just really feed off of everybody’s energy and vibe. If you screw up the take, you do it again, you get the take and it’s good.

Keep up to date with Leon Bridges
